The winner of 2017 edition of the NOVO BANCO REVELAÇÃO award has been chosen.
The jury chose Tiago Madaleno’s project Clepsidra as the winning project of the 2017 edition of the NOVO BANCO REVELAÇÃO award, who will receive a production grant to implement the selected project, which will be presented in a solo exhibition, that will be inaugurated in October in Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art.
The jury was comprised by the president, João Ribas, Deputy Director and Senior Curator of Serralves Museum, Andrea Lissoni, curator of video and photography at Tate Modern in London; Alessio Antoniolli, Director of Gasworks & Triangle Network, London; Ricardo Nicolau, deputy to the director and curator of Serralves Museum, and Filipa Loureiro, curator of Serralves Museum.
Tiago Madaleno’s project Clepsidra - a narrative in the form of a performance - proposes to explore the relationship between photography and temporality, by invoking the presence of the human body in the process of producing images. Using an installation fitted with several devices that exploit an adulterated use of photographic vocabulary, the project questions the visibility conditions of photography, in particular the processes used to produce photographs and use of the index as a working tool.
A catalogue will be published presenting the works by the four finalists - Tiago Madaleno, Henrique Loja, Diogo Bolota and Ana Barata Martins. In addition to images documenting their projects, the catalogue will also include interviews with the artists, conducted by Ricardo Nicolau, jury member and curator of Serralves Museum.
Tiago Madaleno was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in 1992, graduated in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto between 2010 and 2014 and completed his master's degree in painting at the same Faculty between 2014-2016.
Andreia Santana (b. Lisbon 1991) is the winner of the NOVO BANCO REVELAÇÃO PRIZE 2016. The young artist exhibits her project "History of the Fault" at the Serralves Museum, in an exhibition on display until February 12, 2017.

About NOVO BANCO Revelação
The new NOVO BANCO Revelação is a joint initiative of the bank and the Serralves Foundation with the objective of promoting, launching and supporting art production and creation by young Portuguese artists that use photography as their medium.
The competition is open to artists under 30 who submit works/projects never before exhibited or subject to assessment by a jury. The competition is mainly, but not exclusively, addressed to works in photographic support. The subject/theme of the projects submitted is totally free.
From this year, the prize will have a new format, recognising a winner each year and increasing the production grant to 15,000 euros. The new format of NOVO BANCO Revelação will have an international jury who, in the first stage, will select four projects from among the applications received. In the second stage, the jury will select one of the four shortlisted projects as the winner of the competition.
The winner, whose name will be announced in September, will receive a production grant worth 15,000 euros and will have the unique opportunity to show the work in a solo exhibition at the Serralves Museum, opening in November.
By cooperating with the Serralves Museum in an initiative to encourage the emergence of young photographers, NOVO BANCO is extending its cultural sponsorship strategy in the area of photography and at the same time engaging with the community through innovative ways of promoting art photography involving young Portuguese contemporary artists.
