ONLINE SECURITY:

Stay safe when using your card.

Card security

To help keep your card transactions as secure as possible, here are a few key precautions to follow.

  • Your card

If you are told a new card is being sent to you, pay attention to the expected delivery date. If you do not receive it by then, contact the bank immediately.

Sign new cards as soon as you receive them.

Keep your card in a safe place that is not easily accessible to other people.

Keep your card in good condition. Avoid contact with metal objects such as keys and magnetic fields such as wallets with magnets. These can damage the magnetic stripe and make the card harder to use.

When your card reaches its expiry date, destroy it before disposing of it. Make sure the magnetic stripe and signature panel are permanently unusable.

  • Your PIN

Your PIN is personal and must never be shared.

Memorise your PIN as soon as you receive it. Then destroy the envelope it came in. If you must keep it, never leave it somewhere visible or easy to access.

Never write your PIN on the card or on anything you keep with the card.

If you change your PIN, avoid easy combinations such as your birth year or your birthday.

  • Using your card

When entering your PIN, make sure you have privacy and shield the keypad from other people.

Never hand your card to anyone to withdraw cash, make payments, or carry out any other transaction for you.

When paying, do not let the card leave your sight and make sure it is used in a single terminal.

After confirming the amount and entering your PIN, do not allow the transaction to be repeated unless the terminal clearly shows the first attempt was cancelled or unsuccessful.

    Always request proof of purchase.

  • Online payments

Be cautious when paying online. It is not a guarantee but check whether the website shows contact details or a head office address. In general, these elements help indicate the website belongs to the official business.

Use your card only on trusted online stores or when the page is certified and uses security systems, for example a padlock symbol in the browser.

For safer online shopping, sign up all your cards to 3D Secure or create MB NET virtual cards in novobanco Online or in the App.

Avoid sharing your card details by email or phone. This is not secure.

Strong customer authentication for electronic payments

Strong customer authentication is based on using two or more elements from different categories:

Knowledge: For example a PIN or password.
Possession: For example a one time password, a mobile phone, or a payment card.
Inherence: For example a fingerprint.

These elements must be independent. If one is compromised, it should not compromise the others. That is why the bank will ask for two elements from different categories.

For remote payments, strong customer authentication must also include an element that dynamically links the transaction to a specific amount and a specific beneficiary. For example a code generated and sent to the client’s mobile phone.

  • Other advice

If an ATM looks unusual or vandalized, do not use it.

Read all correspondence you receive from novobanco before destroying it. It may include important information about the account linked to your card.

Check your card transactions regularly. If you spot any transaction you did not make, contact the card issuer immediately.

If your card is stolen, lost, misplaced, or counterfeited, cancel it immediately through the Direct Line, novobanco Online, or a Branch. To make reporting easier, keep your card number and or the account number linked to the card available.
